A Cognitive Behavioural Therapist shares insights and reflections on all things mental health, wellbeing and life

Mental Health

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Moreover it is something that we all possess, something to be maintained, attended to and nurtured. Just like our physical health we are all vulnerable to falling into periods where our mental health may not be at the ultimate peak. For some this may be more chronic and longstanding. Sometimes we may be able to implement current coping strategies to get back to ourselves in good time. Other times we may need support from other means, whether that be in the form of friends, family or more specific mental health support. It is all normal and part of what makes being human. Just as we may consult our General Practitioner, for something that needs seeing to- a col, flu, abnormality in the body the same also goes for our mental health. When we may be feeling under the weather in however that shows up for us we may seek to rest or fuel ourselves with home remedies. This can and should also be applied in the case of our mental health.

I have added a photo of the rainforest that I was walking through when I visited Costa Rica. Beauty in the nature is all around. The fresh air, the vibrancy of the foliage, the strength of the trees, the sounds of the wildlife, the path laid out to be walked on in search for more. For me this provided feelings of joy, freedom and emphasised living in the moment in an attempt to experience my surroundings through all of my senses. It invited a reminder of the natural flow of life and how big the world is. The plants and the tall trees for instance requiring the sun and the rain to thrive and survive. It can be argued that they do not strive for this. There is an acceptance and patience that all will be ok and all that is needed will occur. Of course this is not always the case with climate change being a real threat. In this moment at the time this photo was taken, tranquility in allowing things to be as they are and accepting all that life has to offer was invited.
